Abstract

The irrational use of dietary supplements had the potential to pose health risks, particularly when consumed without supervision from medical professionals. Housewives played an important role in making family health decisions, including the selection and use of dietary supplements. This study aimed to describe the level of knowledge among housewives regarding the use of dietary supplements in Gedongan Village, RT 01 RW 05. The study employed a descriptive research design and collected primary data through a closed-ended questionnaire, involving 49 housewife respondents aged 20–55 years during the period of September–October 2021. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a moderate level of knowledge (55,1%), followed by a high level of knowledge at 24,5% and a low level at 20,4%. Knowledge aspects that were well understood included awareness of supplements as complementary to food intake (83,7%), the benefits of vitamin C for immune function (85,7%), and the risks associated with excessive consumption (81,6%). However, gaps in understanding were found in aspects related to storage (40,8%), directions for use (32,7%), and natural supplements (53,1%). In addition, misconceptions persisted regarding multivitamins being able to prevent and treat diseases, although 69,4% of respondents were aware that this belief was incorrect. This study concluded that comprehensive and continuous educational interventions were needed to improve housewives’ knowledge regarding the safe, rational, and appropriate use of dietary supplements according to the body’s needs.
