Abstract

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) has been empirically used to stimulate hair growth. This study aims to evaluate the activity of pomegranate peel water extract in promoting hair growth in local male rabbits. The experiment was conducted on rabbits whose back fur had been shaved, then divided into six treatment groups with a shaved area measuring 2 × 2 cm. Each group consisted of four rabbits. The treatment groups included a positive control (2% minoxidil), a negative control (distilled water), a normal control (no treatment), and groups with extract concentrations of 3%, 5%, and 10%. The test material was applied topically twice daily, in the morning and evening. Hair length measurements were taken on days 9, 12, 15, 18, and 21. Based on the results of the post hoc LSD test, the 5% extract concentration showed the optimal effect on hair growth, with no significant difference compared to the positive control group (p = 0.068). The positive control group showed significant differences (p < 0.05) compared to the 3% and 10% extract groups, the negative control, and the normal control. These findings indicate that a 5% water extract of pomegranate peel (Punica granatum L.) can optimally enhance hair growth.
